IF FLOWERS COULD SPEAK

THE PROCESS

The goal was simple: create a sculpture of flowers in a vase. Not just any flowers, but using my Kiko character.

The challenge: how do I build the stems strong enough that it can carry Kiko’s head?

My first sculpture was with the Melo Maiden character but I was building on top of an existing design whereas with this one, the flowers had to stand alone on the vase.

Building the armature wasn’t the challenge but building the clay around it was. Not only that but smoothing it out using different sanding tools while trying not to break the stems proved to be difficult.

But as with every challenge, there’s much to learn! And where there’s much to learn, there’s more to come!

This challenge proved how much I actually enjoy the process of sculpting. It’s a lot of patience and a lot of trying to make things work as with every design.

So was the goal achieved and challenge addressed?

As someone whose mind is always turning, the vision was in fact accomplished. Can’t say it ended up being the way it was truly intended, BUT a starting point is always the best way to go. And the output ended up looking more “organic”!

THE SHOW

The opening reception was held on June 6 at The Grey Space Gallery in San Juan. It featured a mix of artworks from fellow artists like sculptures to canvas paintings. It was nice to see other experiments others have been up to. Shows with these type of themes in mind help create an openness to creatives. It definitely helped me realize how much I want to explore sculpting further.
